Sarah Bitternose was born in Regina, Saskatchewan . Growing up on a farm outside of a small hamlet, Markinch, Sarah learned about the surrounding communities and people that reside there. Sarah's mother passed away at an early age when her father raised her and her three brothers on his own. There they raised cattle and harvested grain, enduring the long hours, harsh weather conditions and the hard work maintaining a farm. Attending school in Southey SK, she grew up with the love of sports. She started playing softball at an early age and over the years realized her “natural” athletic ability. Her passion for softball, badminton, basketball, volleyball, and golf had a great impact on herself and her family. Throughout the years of growing up, she spent most of her time trying out for travelling teams and joining teams wherever she had the time and opportunity to do so. She was represented as an athlete in Southey, Regina, and her band George Gordon First Nation. Over the years, Sarah excelled in many awards and championships, travelling all over Canada and the United States. Attending Indigenous games, provincials and many tournaments are proud and memorable experiences for her. Playing sports, Sarah learned the leadership, dedication, hard work and support it takes for something you are passionate about.
Once she graduated from Robert Southey school, Sarah enrolled at the University of Regina, studying Kinesiology. While attending school, she decided to take some time to help and travel with her spiritual and traditional grandmother who was a healer or known as a medicine woman. Growing up, she and her siblings learned the traditional ways of her ancestors through the teachings from her grandmother and other elders. She spent time travelling to many places looking for and picking roots with her grandmother and was taught how to make medicine to help families from all over Western Canada. Sarah was taught the four Rs by her elders: Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility. She continues to pass this knowledge on to her daughter with respect to the emotional, mental and spiritual healing for the past abuses and trauma that so many of our Indigenous friends and family have endured over the generations. Sarah had taught her daughter that everything in creation is sacred and has spirit.
As her family evolved, Sarah started her years working and raising her family. As a single mother, she made the decision to get into carpentry. She worked as a carpenter for twelve years building and manufacturing stair products. Then with Mewasin Business Forms in marketing and supply chain management. She still resides in her hometown raising her daughter. In her spare time, she continues to be highly involved in sports, while teaching and supporting her daughter’s everyday activities. Her goal and focus is a safe and positive future for herself and her family.
